IELTS Speaking 2025 Part 1: Parties

1. How often do you go to a party?

• Useful expressions:
  • “I try to go to parties whenever I have the chance, but…“

  • “I’m not a big party person, but I do enjoy…“
• Grammar structure: Present Simple for general habits and Present Continuous for temporary situations.
• Sample answer:
  I try to go to parties whenever I have the chance, but it really depends on my schedule and mood. If I’m busy with work or studies, I might not go out much, but if there’s a special occasion like a birthday or a wedding, I definitely make an effort to attend. I’d say I go to a party once every couple of months on average. I’m not a big party person, but I do enjoy spending time with friends and celebrating special moments.

2. What is your favourite kind of party?

• Grammar structure: Present Simple for likes/dislikes and Comparatives (more/less fun than…).
• Sample answer:
  I really enjoy parties where I can relax and have meaningful conversations with friends. I’m not a fan of very loud or crowded parties but I do like gatherings where there’s good food, nice music, and a comfortable atmosphere. For me, the best parties are the ones that feel personal, like house parties or small dinner parties with close friends. I think it’s more enjoyable when you can actually talk to people rather than just shout over loud music.

3. Have you ever been to a party in another city?

• Grammar structure: Present Perfect (Have you ever…?) and Past Simple for describing past experiences.

  Yes, I have! One time, I went to a friend’s wedding in another city, and it was amazing because the venue was beautiful, the food was incredible, and I got to meet a lot of new people. The atmosphere felt different from the parties in my hometown, and it was really exciting to experience a celebration in a new place. Going to a party in another city can be exciting because you get to explore a new environment while having fun at the same time.

4. Do you prefer hosting a party or attending one?

  • “Hosting a party can be fun because… but it can also be stressful because…“

• Grammar structure: Comparatives (hosting is more… than attending), Present Simple (general preference), and Present Continuous (temporary situations).
• Sample answer:
  I enjoy both, but if I had to choose, I’d say I prefer attending parties rather than hosting them. Hosting a party can be fun because you get to decide on the food, music, and decorations, but it can also be stressful because you have to make sure everyone is having a good time. On the other hand, when you attend a party, you can just relax, enjoy the event, and leave whenever you want. That being said, if it’s a small gathering with close friends, I wouldn’t mind hosting once in a while.
